Chapter Seven
âThere you are, my handsome devil!â
His tension evaporated at Catherineâs loud whisper. She hadnât let go of his waist, so he turned within the circle of her arms to face her, leaning back against the table. âYouââ
She clamped a small hand over his mouth. Pressing her bodyâher scantily-clad bodyâagainst him, she said, âI told you I could find you anywhere. Shadowy corridors and darkened rooms will not keep me from my wild stallion.â She punctuated this insane statement by nearly climbing his body to kiss him.
At first, her hot lips and roving handsânot to mention the way she straddled his thighâdistracted him into returning her kiss. He anchored his hands around her hips and pulled her against his instantaneous erection. His blood had gone from freezing to boiling in a matter of seconds, and he broke his earlier vow just as quickly, ravishing her soft mouth as if he hadnât kissed a woman in months.
However, a dash of sense remained somewhere in his body. He noted her rash behavior and illogical words and wondered if she was a sleep-walker. His sister had walked in her sleep in her youth, more often than not frightening the family with her dangerous nocturnal adventures.
With great reluctance he severed their erotic kiss and took her face between his hands. âMiss Jones, are youâ?â
She blinked twice before launching herself at him once more. She flung her arms around his neck and kissed her way from his jaw to his temple. While doing unspeakably provocative things to his ear, she murmured, âPretense. I have no idea why you are skulking around, but I do know that Mr. Telford is sitting, most observant, in the corner.â
Brilliant work, Drake. Not only had Catherine followed him without his knowledge, but heâd missed Telfordâs presence. Had the man seen what Hugh was about?
Catherineâs lips took a detour and trailed down his neck, interrupting his criticism. She pushed the collar of his shirt aside and applied her mouth to his shoulder, nipping, kissing and licking with abandon. His cock twitched. A groan escaped.
Do something, his conscience mumbled.
He grasped her sides, intending to ease her away, but his thumb encountered an erect nipple beneath her thin gown and the dark shawl she had thrown over her shoulders. He covered her breast with his hand and squeezed. She arched away and threw back her head. Hugh captured her lips with a growl and flicked his thumb over and over and over that rigid nipple. His ballocks grew heavier as his erection strained against his breeches.
Do something else, his conscience grumbled.
He released her breast and her mouth, sliding his hands down, meaning to push her off him. Her thighs were bare; the shift had ridden up as she sat astride his leg. Instinctively he slid his hands around and grasped her naked buttocks.
âOh, Hugh,â she cried.
Not that! his conscience bellowed.
He took a deep, shuddering breath and stood up, swinging Catherine into his arms. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he thanked God her gown had fallen back over her legs.
